'I'm one of life's aunties.' Introducing Intergenerational Conversations, a brand-new interview series on The Shoulds, featuring special guest Sam Baker.
Hi Thea (GREAT name)! Thanks for your comment, that's so kind of you to say – and interested to hear the interview with Sam related to your experience! That's a big part of what I wanted to do with this series – I'm glad it resonated.
The list of “shoulds” is very similar. By the time I turned 30, family members asking when I was going to get married and have kids. How many women marry the wrong man b/c they should have a family “before it’s too late”? I married at 36 and had my son 10 days before my 38th bday. It seemed best to wait to find the right man before having kids!
I also wanted to pursue a career in the music industry as a journalist , which was considered less than ambitious. My writing skills and music knowledge landed me a job at AOL, where my boss and I created the “content programmer” role to mimic programming directors at radio stations. Like that, I’ve had to create my own opportunities vs following a traditional career path toward success.
Loved the Q&A with Sam. I’m 55 and have so many generational and physical similarities to her story.

Wonderful. Thank you. Especially for the last ‘should’- you should always be able to look yourself in the eyes.
